What Children Need...

As we finish our third year at NLA, I look back at how we've grown and how we continue to evolve.  Here we GROW again!

I am often asked what drives me to do this work (or play) now that my own children are older.  My response is usually that I just love working with children!  Yes, I love their excitement and I love their wonder and curiosity.  I also know the importance of a loving and respectful first learning environment!  I am blessed to be able to provide this for children and I am grateful that I LOVE my work!  I also know having a like-minded community for support is such a gift for us all!  I am grateful that you choose NLA for your child and I look forward to many more years to come!

Here are some principles behind what I believe makes NLA a unique environment:

At NLA we remember that.....

                               Children need to EXPLORE!

                                 Children need to CREATE

(with focus on process and not necessarily on product)!

Children need to be in NATURE!

"If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in." ~ Rachel Carson

"It's a good thing to learn about nature in order to share knowledge with children; it's even better if the adult and child learn about nature together. And its a lot more fun."  Richard Louv (author of Last Child in the Woods)

We remember that children need TIME to be curious and plenty of uninterrupted time to ENGAGE!

We remember that children need the opportunities to PRACTICE social skills. WE are not born knowing how to share or how to solve conflicts.  There are also developmental stages for these skills. We are all works in progress. Each "conflict" is a learning opportunity.

"Every stage of development is complete in itself. The 3 year old is not an incomplete 5 year old.  The child is not an incomplete adult. NEVER are we simply on our way! Always we have arrived! Enjoy Now! ~J.C. Pearce

We remember that children need to be listened to, to be RESPECTED with their feelings fully acknowledged.

We had a few children "bridge" this year! While we will miss them next Fall,  they are always welcome at NLA and I know we will see them again!
